The respite caregiver role

Respite caregivers work one-on-one in a family's home with a child or adult who has a developmental or intellectual disability. Shifts are typically a few hours at a time on a schedule authorized by the regional center, and you're placed with the same families so trust can build over time.

Supervision and companionship

You are there so the family can rest. That means attentive supervision, conversation, games, music, and genuine presence throughout the shift.

Personal care assistance

Support with grooming, toileting, dressing, mobility, and transfers as outlined in the care plan for that individual.

Meals and light household support

Preparing simple meals and snacks, feeding assistance when needed, and tidying up the areas used during your shift.

Safety monitoring

Watching for seizures, behavioral triggers, choking risk, or elopement, and following the household's documented safety protocols.

Documentation

Clock in and out in the app, log completed tasks, and collect the parent or guardian's sign-off at the end of every visit.
